I just read a great article called How To Build Muscle: The Definitive Guide. It talks about how beginners should not start out imitating the professional bodybuilders. When you are just starting out, you need to be focused on compound excercises like bench press, squats, deadlifts and barbell rows.
Isolation exercises are good only if you have large muscle mass to work with. So many beginners are led astray by bodybuilding magazine articles showing you what Ronnie Coleman uses or Arnold’s split routine. I used to train with Arnold’s 5 day split routine and got really frustrated because I wasn’t achieving the results that I wanted.
Go check out this article, it’s a good starter guide and gives some really solid advice about building muscle mass.
